PHYSICAL EDUCATION

At Tickford Park Primary School, we provide high quality PE and School Sport experiences that enable all young people whatever their circumstances or ability to take part in and enjoy PE and sport. Through sport’s activities we are able to promote young people’s health, safety and well-being. We enable all young people to improve and achieve in line with their age and potential.

“PE at Tickford Park is so fun. We get to play team games and work together. I love running about and taking part in cross-country lessons. I think my teacher has been proud of me!”

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Curriculum Intent

Milton Keynes School Sports Partnership

For many years we have paid into the MKSSP partnership to enhance our PE provision as well as having access to a range of extra-curricular sport and physical activity and competitive opportunities. The MKSSP provides us with PE CPD opportunities for staff and we use their progressive planning scheme to ensure that children have knowledge and understanding of the fundamental skills.

Sports Festivals
Through our affiliation with the MKSSP, we are able to attend various Sports festivals for both KS1 and KS2 children throughout the year. The festivals that we compete in include; invasion, net/wall, striking and fielding, dance, gymnastics and athletics. We have had many Sporting successes over the past few years and we are very proud of everyone who has competed.

Swimming
Swimming catch up lessons are happening for KS2. The swimming instructors spend six weeks teaching the children to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m. They also teach the children how to use a range of strokes effectively and to perform safe self-rescue in different water base situations. In the Summer term, we will provide top up swimming lessons for any year 6 children who are not achieving these requirements. We are very pleased that we have met the KS2 requirements for swimming last year (see sports premium report).

HIT 5
The Milton Keynes HIT 5 programme is a whole school approach to developing Health and Wellbeing for all children. The aim is to heighten children’s and parent’s awareness and understanding of what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. Increase children's fitness levels and physical literacy, which should in turn encourage participation in activities. Improve children's wellbeing, through understanding and empathy for others, social skills, teamwork and cooperation. Increase attainment across the whole school, through confident and happy learners.

Year 6 Sports Leaders
Each year, we elect sports leaders which include: health, play and sports lead.

Our Health Leaders role is to check lunchboxes and award children with healthy eating stickers. They will also promote our HIT5 programme which focuses on a different theme each half term. Our Play Leaders work with children who have been targeted for not attending an after-school sporting club or event, or any children who find playing sensibly and safely at playtimes difficult. The activities that the group organise are specifically designed to encourage turn taking and sharing as well as encouraging teamwork. Our Sports Leaders help train team members for upcoming festivals, collect letters for Sports festivals, collect team kits and help with equipment.

Milton Mile
The Milton Mile consists of running several laps around the mile track on the playground up to five times a week. The initiative is specifically designed to improve the children’s fitness levels as well as their concentration in lessons. Lots of classes have been doing the Milton Mile as their ‘brain break’ and to refocus their attention during longer learning sessions. It also helps towards our 30 active minutes each day!

Sports Day
Each year a school Sports Day is held in Summer term. In July, we introduced more competition into our Sports Day where the children competed in their houses. The winning house was awarded with a non-school uniform day the following day. The children enjoyed the competitive nature of the event and we look forward to seeing who the new house champions will be this year! Following on from the success of Sports Day, this year we are introducing inter-house competitions. At the end of each PE unit, each year group will hold an inter-competition in the Sport that they have been learning.
