MATHS - Curriculum Intent

At Tickford Park Primary School, we want our children to be secure in their knowledge and develop into confident mathematicians, who can recognise the importance of maths in the wider world and how it underpins much of our daily lives.

The National Curriculum skills (to become fluent, to reason mathematically and to solve problems) are embedded within our Maths lessons and developed steadily over time. We aim to give all of our children a chance to believe in themselves as mathematicians and develop the power of resilience and perseverance when faced with mathematical challenges.

For us, it is important that our children understand what they are doing, rather than following a process or learning the mechanics of a method. Children are taught through teacher modelling, incorporating the pictorial, concrete and abstract framework into lessons, to ensure connections are made between the representations.

Talking in full sentences, reasoning and explanations are a key feature in our lessons; enabling deeper thinking and providing endless opportunities to: be curious, ask questions and to practise thinking like a mathematician. We promote an environment where Maths is fun and it is absolutely ok to be ‘wrong’ because the journey to finding an answer, solution, or possible solutions, is most important.
