Religious Education (RE) - Curriculum Intent

Picture
Progression Document

At Tickford Park, we believe that Religious Education (RE) is vital to children’s well-being. RE promotes the social, moral, cultural and mental development of all pupils and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. Religious Education (RE) is not a National Curriculum subject, but must be taught to all pupils as part of the Basic Curriculum. As RE is not nationally determined, each Local Education Authority must provide an Agreed Syllabus for us to follow. RE is an essential area of study if pupils are to be well prepared for life in a world where controversy over religious and non-religious world views is pervasive and where many people lack the knowledge to make their own informed decisions. It is a subject for all pupils, whatever their own family background and personal beliefs and practices.

Using the Milton Keynes RE Syllabus, we follow the strands of Believing, Behaving and Belonging. At Key Stage 1, teaching and learning is focused around Christianity and Judaism, alongside understanding of non-religious approaches to life. At Key Stage 2, teaching and learning is extended to include Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism, alongside other religions and understanding of non-religious approaches to life. Children are encouraged to look for the connections and similarities between belief systems, as well as exploring the differences.

RE at Tickford Park, provides opportunities for children to reflect and analyse, to discuss and debate, to explore and discover, and to learn more about the world in which they live.  It encourages children to ask ‘Big questions’ and consider their own and others' spiritual beliefs.
