Maths

At Tickford Park Primary School, we want our children to be secure in their knowledge and develop into confident mathematicians, who can recognise the importance of maths in the wider world and how it underpins much of our daily lives. The National Curriculum skills (to become fluent, to reason mathematically and to solve problems) are embedded within our Maths lessons and developed steadily over time. We aim to give all of our children a chance to believe in themselves as mathematicians and develop the power of resilience and perseverance when faced with mathematical challenges. For us, it is important that our children understand what they are doing, rather than following a process or learning the mechanics of a method. Children are taught through teacher modelling, incorporating the pictorial, concrete and abstract framework into lessons, to ensure connections are made between the representations. Talking in full sentences, reasoning and explanations are a key feature in our lessons; enabling deeper thinking and providing endless opportunities to: be curious, ask questions and to practise thinking like a mathematician. We promote an environment where Maths is fun and it is absolutely ok to be ‘wrong’ because the journey to finding an answer, solution, or possible solutions, is most important.

At TPPS, we aim to ensure all children move together through their learning, with whole class teaching from EYFS to Year 4. In Years 5 and 6, our children are taught in ability groups, to ensure the pace and content covered is appropriately challenging for them and to prepare them as much as possible for their next journey of their education. At TPPS, formative assessment takes place in every lesson to inform planning so that sequences of lessons meet the needs of the class. We carry out summative assessments at key points in the year, within our school’s monitoring and evaluating cycle, which include NFER and Testbase assessments. We follow the national curriculum and use White Rose schemes of work and NCETM mastery materials as a guide to support teachers with their planning and assessment. Key vocabulary is introduced and revisited regularly. A variety of maths learning is revisited daily, as part of our morning routine of ‘Fluency Four’, enabling children to become secure in their understanding and fluency and to embed the knowledge.
During their time at Tickford Park Primary School, we want children to become confident mathematicians, who are engaged, inquisitive and always willing to ‘have a go’, before moving onto the next stage of their education. |
