Art - Curriculum Intent

Here at Tickford Park Primary school we want to foster a lifelong appreciation of art in all its many forms. We strive to show children how they can be creative individuals and we aim to give them the tools, exposure and experiences so that they can express themselves artistically throughout their lives.
Our school provides a balanced art curriculum which encompasses colour, drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and textiles, where skills are built upon year on year. We also strive to be dynamic and not rigid in our pursuit of art development and we understand that art expression is constantly evolving, for example, digitally. Cross curricular links are made between art and other subjects, for example, literacy when creating illustrations for our writing and making clay pots for our Greek topic. |
Sketchbooks are used from year 3 onwards and is a collection of the children’s inspiration and a journal of their developing art skills which may lead to final piece of work. Children work on a variety of scales and with different involvement. Opportunities are given to children to work alone, in small groups or even contributing to a whole class piece of art as this builds on vital communication skills. We encourage the children to examine theirs and others work critically; examining what they are pleased with and what they would do differently next time.

Where possible, we take inspiration from our local environment; sketching and painting from first-hand experience.
Making good links with our local community, we take part in the Christmas tree festival at Peter and St Paul’s Church in Newport Pagnell. The children get to participate in a lunch time art club and design and create the decorations that will adorn the trees. Year one have planned a trip to the sculpture trail at Campbell Park which is a great opportunity for the children to view sculptures made from different materials. |
